With so much happening around us and all the stresses and worries associated with our busy daily lives, it’s easy to forget to actually live in the now.
There may be brief moments where we’re jolted back to reality but we just as quickly return to the “what about tomorrow” stresses and the, “I can’t do that I don’t have time” mentality. In fact, I’m doing it right now – worrying about how Shannon and I are going to keep up with the demands of running our small business and how we will deal with the exciting new opportunities being presented to emubob tea. Indeed, we all know life passes us by so quickly, so it’s even more important to find that special something that puts us in the present moment; to truly appreciate our lives and be more content and happier.
Yep, it’s not just you thinking easier said than done. But here are few ideas to get us all thinking!
If you’re the creative type, working on a project or creating something new is a sure-fire way to be in the present moment! For Shannon and I the emubob journey has been so valuable in appreciating the now! Do it on your own or with the kids - if you need some ideas, check out some of our great upcycled activities here.
TAKE A WALK
Clearing your head and concentrating on where you’re walking will get you in the now. Don’t take your headphones, just walk, look and listen to what’s around you, smile and say hello to the people you pass. Not only will it make you feel good but you’ll make someone else feel good too. Hey, even better, take a friend with you and you can both enjoy the present moment together!
STAY OFF SOCIAL MEDIA AND ELECTRONIC DEVICES
Yes you read it right!! Think about this...how can you ever really be living in the moment when you’re somewhere else, looking at your phone, on your iPad or on Facebook? Why not give it a rest for a while and actually have a real conversation with someone IN PERSON or watch the kids play? Better still play with the kids and have fun (but do it quickly before anyone gets injured as they inevitably do!). You’ll find the effort is well worth it and it may even give you the motivation to be more productive and focused on YOUR LIFE.
LISTEN TO MUSIC, DANCE OR PLAY AN INSTRUMENT
You can’t beat a beat to enjoy the moment! Music is invaluable, whether you’re creating it, dancing to it or listening to it! It’s even better when you can share the rhythm with your partner, friends or the kids (or for my kids, their aunty Shannon who loves to have a dance-off!).
SHARE A GREAT CUP OF TEA OR COFFEE OR GATHER FOR A MEAL
There’s something special about sitting down with friends and family and sharing a pot of tea, a coffee or a big hearty meal. In fact, with three kids, there’s something special about sitting down on your own and simply enjoying a cup of tea! For me it’s magical. That sip of warm tea after a crazy day is so enjoyable and always brings a smile to my face.
So, give it a go! Find that special something in your life that puts you in the present moment where the stresses and worries are replaced with contentment and appreciation.
